Body TypeAre you an apple or a pear? Take off your clothes (unless you didn’t get dressed again after weighing yourself and take out your tape measure. (A cloth or Mylar tape works best when measuring curves.) Measure your waist and write down the measurement in your notebook. Can’t find your waist? If you’re a serious apple, you may not be familiar with the location of your waist. No, it’s not where your pants ride or where you buckle your belt. It’s right above your navel and below your ribcage.

Here’s how to locate your waist: Bend forward or to the side. The place that creases is where your natural waist is.

Now measure your hips. Be sure to pass the tape around the widest part of your buttocks. Write down the measurement in your notebook.

Now divide your waist measurement by your hip measurement. That’s right, you may be dividing a smaller number by a larger number. Write the answer you get in the space provided in your personal database.

Is your WHR less than I? If so, you are a pear. If your WHR is 1 or more, you are an apple. Circle your fruit. Check your personal database for the special problems associated with your body type and circle the one that applies to you.

Knowing whether you are an apple or a pear is valuable information, but it doesn’t tell you whether you are overweight or not. You may be a small apple, or a very large pear!
